“Ye Scabby Sea Bass!”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Write a story about a pirate pumpkin.” — suggested by Mary
“Aargh!” she shouted, brandishing her sword above her head. “Get off our ship, ye scabby sea bass!”
He jumped backward, landing perfectly on the railing. He almost lost his balance but managed to stay on the ship, even with the rocking of the waves.
“It’s our ship now!” he shouted, using his own sword to point at the others fighting behind her. “Surrender!”
“Never!” she roared, lunging toward him. But it was a desperate, sloppy stab, which he easily deflected.
With a flick of his wrist, he caught the edge of her jaw and drew a thin line up to the corner of her mouth. She let out a gasp of pain as her hand shot up to cover her wound.
“Nathan!” she screamed. “You destroyed my pumpkin!”
Nathan shrugged and jumped down off the stool. “Geez, it’s just a pumpkin, Liz.”
“But you promised you wouldn’t hurt it!” she bawled, her fists stemming the flow of tears from her eyes. “You promised!“
Nathan sighed and dragged his feet over to Liz. They were having such a good time, but then she had to go and ruin it. Sometimes he hated his little bratty sister.
“Look,” he said, kneeling down next to her pumpkin. He pressed his thumb against the pumpkin’s torn flesh and rubbed it smooth. Soon, its wound was imperceptible. “There. All gone. Are you happy now?”
Liz sniffled and rubbed the snot from her nose with her sleeve. “I guess,” she murmured.
“Good,” Nathan said, standing up and returning to his spot on the stool. “Now, can we please finish this battle? I was so close to defeating you and winning your ship!”
Liz’s expression immediately hardened. She jumped back up to her feet.
“You’ll never win!” she screeched.
Nathan grinned as their swords were locked in battle once again.
Final Comments: I feel like the narration style didn’t really match the ages of the characters, but it was a lot of fun to write a pirate story!
