“Wearing Yellow”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Yellow.

I despise the colour yellow. It’s just so cheery, so unnecessarily optimistic and sunny.

Now, being forced to wear this horrid yellow jumpsuit every day, I’m regretting ever committing the horrible crime that I did. I mean, I must be a truly terrible monster to have to wear this yellow uniform every day for the next fifteen years of my life.

A lot of people have told me to stop complaining, that wearing yellow isn’t so bad in comparison to the other things they make us do down here. But for me? Wearing yellow is the absolute worst part of this.

My cellmate in particular enjoys complaining. He says that I need to stop worrying about the little things and join his escape team, whatever that means. I mean, he can’t seriously believe that it’s possible to escape from here, can he?

Oh, you know what, there is one thing worse than having to wear this yellow uniform every day. Laundry duty. That’s about a hundred times worse than everyday wear. You know why? Because then I have to wash and sort and fold the yellow uniforms. There’s just yellow everywhere. You literally can’t escape it. By the time I leave the laundry room, everything looks yellow.

That’s what I call the Yellow Prison. The absolute worst punishment possible.

Final Comments: I really didn’t like this one. The wording just didn’t come out smoothly and I just kind of kept rambling…
