Take Ten to Write

“War”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Music prompt: “Near Valholl” by Atom Music Audio

The horses drew near, hooves muffled by the damp dirt. Flickering torches lit up their faces, dark eyes narrowed as they ride forth. War markings covered their forehead and cheeks. An illusion to make their victims’ last sight a nightmare.

The archers nervously shuffled their feet, armoured shoes clanking against the stone. Muscles bunched, they held their bows as steady as their trembling arms would allow.

A yell. The torches were extinguished. Darkness swallowed the moonless plain.

Silence. Blackness. Nothing.

Then fire. An explosion. Light, piercing through both darkness and men’s bodies. Screams. Arrows. Flailing limbs. Chunks of rock, plunging to the ground.

Screams.

Blood.

Fire.

War.
