Take Ten to Write

“Waiting on Lady Rosenvall”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Fish fillet.” — suggested by Mary

“Bring me the fish with a side of beans and asparagus,” Lady Rosenvall said, lifting her nose in the air as she handed her waiter the menu. “And make sure that the beans and asparagus are not overcooked.”

The waiter bowed his head and backed away. He muttered something about ‘entitled noblewomen’ as he made his way back to the kitchen.

As he placed the order, he made sure to speak directly with the chef to convey Lady Rosenvall’s very specific directions. After all, even though he was just a waiter, he would be the one getting yelled at if the order wasn’t up to her standards.

He left the chef as she began preparing Lady Rosenvall’s meal. He went back out into the dining hall to take other orders, all the while keeping an eye on the noblewoman to make sure that she wasn’t signaling for him. He was already in trouble with his boss for forgetting to put ice in Lord Barry’s tea and one more small mistake could lead to the end of his employment.

Luckily, she didn’t call on him. He breathed out a sigh of relief as he returned to the kitchen to pick up her meal. Before he left the kitchen, he double checked to make sure that everything was perfect. The fish, beans, and asparagus were all cooked to perfection. That mean that he had about fifteen seconds to get the meal from the kitchen to her table before she complained that it was either overcooked or too cold.

Final Comments: I realized that I haven’t written a lot of stories set in restaurants. It’s actually a really interesting setting, and I might incorporate it into more of my stories.
