Prompt: Write a story titled “Time to Say Goodbye”.
The tear trickles down my cheek as I run my fingers through her fur.
She raises her head, ever so slightly, and I catch her eye. Her eyes no longer have their characteristic sparkle, their shine. They’re flat and dull, but I can see the intelligence beneath the pain.
She blinks slowly and a fresh sob escapes from me. She’s telling me that it’s okay, that she’s ready to go.
She might be ready, but I’m not. I’m never going to be ready. But she’s in pain. She’s suffering, I can see that much. I’m the one prolonging her suffering now. I’m being selfish.
I run my fingers through her fur one last time and give her a kiss on the top of her head.
I force myself to take a trembling step back. She watches me, reassuring me, telling me that she loves me.
I take a deep breath. Through my tears, I smile. I smile, and thank her for the time we spent together.
Her eyes close. A slow, soft breath escape from her lips.
Tears fill my vision as I whisper “Goodbye”.
Final Comments: I don’t really have anything to say about this one…
