“They Came At Noon”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Write a story titled “They Came at Noon”.
Most bad things seem to happen at night. Midnight, to be precise. I’m not sure why; maybe it’s because it’s dark at night so that makes things scarier?
Honestly, though, is it scarier to not be able to see what’s coming or to be able to see what’s coming? Think about it: picture the scariest monster or being or creature (I’m picturing my gym teacher yelling at me to get to the top of that darn rope!). Now, would you prefer to not see it coming until after it’s murdered you or to see it coming in broad daylight? Personally, I’d much prefer just getting killed so that I never have to climb that stupid rope again.
I think that’s what made this whole ordeal so much worse. You see, when they came, they didn’t come at midnight; they came at noon. Right in the middle of broad daylight. Yep, that’s right; I saw each and every one of them in full glory, jagged fangs, razor-sharp claws, glinting eyes, murderous intent. Everything.
Maybe some people would prefer to see the enemy as they run toward them so that they know the dangers they’re facing. Nope, not me. I can do without the fangs and claws and eyes.
And yet, I wasn’t given a choice. Because they came at noon.
Final Comments: I discovered after writing this that comedy-horror novels exist. I never even considered that combination!
