Take Ten to Write

“There Is This One Thing…”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Well, there is this one thing I’ve always wanted to do…”

“Well, there is this one thing I’ve always wanted to do,” Yvonne murmurs.

“Oh? And what would that be?”

A blush creeps across her cheeks. “It’s embarrassing.”

I roll my eyes. “Come on, it’s just me. There’s literally nothing you could say to me that I would find embarrassing.”

She hesitates for a moment more. “If I tell you, do you promise not to laugh?”

“Pinkie swear.” I stick out my pinkie and she takes it.

“Okay.” She pauses a moment more before finally saying, “I really want to see a sunset.”

I stare at her. “You’ve never seen a sunset?”

She shakes her head. “I always fall asleep before then,” she says softly. Her cheeks redden again. “It’s embarrassing that I can’t stay awake.”

“Why is that embarrassing?” I chuckle. “Isn’t it a good thing that you get lots of sleep?”

“I never said that I get lots of sleep,” she says slowly. “It’s just that at exactly six o’clock, my eyes droop and I fall asleep.”

“Still not a reason to be embarrassed.”

She just shrugs in response.

I nudge her. “So let’s watch the sunset.”

She rolls her eyes. “Have you not been listening to a word I just said? I can’t stay awake that late.”

“Yeah, but you’ve got me now. I’ll help keep you awake.”

“You would do that?”

I smile at her. “For you? I’d do anything.”

Final Comments: I’m not sure if this ended up as a romance. Originally, it was actually supposed to be Yvonne’s last wish, maybe even during an apocalypse, but I couldn’t find a way to naturally insert that information anywhere.
