“On The Waterless Sea”

Prompt: Scorching desert.

The wind lifts the sand, revealing yet another polished shield beneath. A second later, the breeze shifts again, and the glinting metal disappears from view.

“Ah,” Captain Meck says, his voice grave, “another victim to the Waterless Sea. I wonder which ship it was this time.” He absentmindedly strokes the stubble on his chin. “The Treeless perhaps?”

“The Treeless was last seen in Kixina,” Hin says. “Two days ago. There’s no way the tides could’ve brought it all the way out here in that time.”

Kipa leans over the railing, squinting at the waves of sand below. “Wasn’t the Ilithia docked in Firin this week?”

Immediately, she winces and turns to me. “Sorry, Ika, I didn’t mean–“

I wave her off. “My sister knows better than to sail past Ek’s Peak at this time of year. Trust me, this isn’t the Ilithia.”
