“Wander”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Sparkling water.” — suggested by E.L. Stew
Apparently, water used to sparkle.
The grass used to be green. Life used to exist.
I’m not sure how civilization turned into… this. It’s been so long since I’ve seen another moving thing.
Nowadays, I simply wander, purposeless and hopeless, rolling through the desert of what used to be a lush planet.
Sometimes, to pass the time, I look into my memory to try to remember what it would’ve been like before.
Apparently, humans used to roam this planet. They ruled the world, creating vast cities and civilizations through the ages. I’ve seen some of their architectural work; it’s quite impressive.
However, life wasn’t perfect for the humans. War. Hunger. Poverty. Drought.
Eventually, their greed brought about their downfall.
The human race was wiped out. But the damage that they had done lasted much longer.
Finally, all life was wiped out.
I wish I could’ve lived in that time and seen an actual human. Of course, I shouldn’t consider myself as being ‘alive’. The centuries of traveling alone must be getting to me.
Still, I long to see something again. Preferably another droid who could fix my programming. But, until then, I’ll simply wander.
Final Comments: I had no idea what to do with this prompt and I’m not really sure how I feel about the story that came from it…
