“The Truth”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “I’m not lying!”

“LIAR!” he roars, spit flying onto my face.

I screw up my nose as I feel the droplets rolling down to my chin. But I resist reaching up to wipe them off; instead, I steel myself and raise my eyes to meet his challenge.

“I’m not lying,” I say calmly. “I’ve only ever told you the truth.”

“You were there,” he growls, breathing hard. Sweat drips down his forehead as he glares at me. “That night in Heggard. I saw what you did. Do you deny that?”

Heggard. I haven’t heard that name in a long time.

My eyes drop to the ground. “I don’t deny that I was there,” I murmur. “But–“

“You were there with the Neviri, weren’t you?”

“Well, yes, but I–“

“And you were helping them?”

“Yes, but–“

“You were doing their dirty work for them?”

“I–“

“You killed her didn’t you?!”

I breathe out slowly as glimpses of the memory flash through my mind.

Heggard. The Neviri. His wife. Her look of fear. Her body lying at my feet.

Flashes. That’s all I can remember. All, except for the anger. Anger tinting the edge of my vision. Anger overtaking every fiber of my being. Anger controlling my every move.

He could never understand. He never will. So I’ll tell him. It’s time to accept my fate.

I look up to meet his eyes. ‘Yes, I did. I killed her.”

Final Comments: I had a really hard time wording that last bit…
