“The Stick”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Can you pass the _____?”
“Can you pass that one?”
I look up to see Harriet pointing at a particular stick poking out from the pile.
“Are you sure you want this one?” I ask, tapping it with the tip of my fingernail. “It’s pretty prickly.”
“I’m sure,” she says, eyes gleaming. “I just have a feeling, you know?”
I frown, but tug the stick out of the pile and hand it to her. “Not really.”
She takes the stick and a smile lights up her face. “Don’t worry,” she says, only half paying attention to me, “I’m sure you’ll hear the Call soon.”
I shake my head with a scoff. “Sure. I’m super excited to hear my name being called by a stick.”
“It’s not a stick!” Harriet gasps, clutching her stick close to her chest. “It’s the source of our power!”
“Sure,” I repeat dryly. “When I find my stick, I’ll become an all-powerful Wizard of the Woods. Is that right?”
“IT’S NOT A STICK!” Harriet screeches before looking down at her stick. “Don’t listen to him. He’s just being a meanie because he hasn’t found his wand yet.”
“Oh great,” I drawl. “Now you’re talking to the stick.”
Final Comments: I had fun with this one!
