Take Ten to Write

“The Riders”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Music prompt: “Blood Moon” by End of Silence (feat. Alexa Ray)

“Whoa,” Kaliyta whispered, her mouth in the shape of a small ‘o’ as she watched the Riders pass. Their steeds’ coats glistened in the morning light, dappled with dew and patterned with traditional painted patterns.

Nerivdia glanced over at her daughter. A smile pulled at her own lips; she remembered that feeling of wonder after seeing the Riders for the first time.

The Riders slowed their steeds, patting them on the neck before guiding them into a tight circle. They were finished their morning patrol; now it was time for training exercises.

“Mama, can we go watch?” Kaliyta asked, tugging at her mother’s skirt.

Nerivdia chuckled. “Alright, but we can’t stay too long. You’ve got your chores to do.”

But Kaliyta was already on her way to get closer to the Riders; Nerivdia was certain that her daughter had only heard the first part of her sentence.

Even though the Riders were a magnificent sight, Nerivdia’s eyes were glued to her daughter. Kaliyta was entirely entranced by the Riders. She was taking in every movement, every routine, every word.

Nerivida’s smile widened. Her daughter was already well on her way for continuing the family’s line of Riders.

Final Comments: I wasn’t too sure how to end this one. Not completely happy with it, but otherwise I would’ve ended up writing an entire life story for Kaliyta…
