“The Radio”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Radio.
“Everything would be so much easier if we just had a radio,” Claudius mutters, shooting a dark look at me.
My cheeks burn as I mumble, “I said I was sorry.”
“No one blames you,” Amelia says, patting my back before scowling at Claudius. “And you. Go pick on someone your own size.”
Claudius wrinkles his nose at us before dropping back to join his brother.
As soon as he’s out of earshot, I murmur, “But it was my fault. I’m the one who dropped the radio.”
“Yes, but if you hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here now,” Amelia says, giving me a smile. “As much as Claudius doesn’t like me, he won’t be rid of me that easily.”
I chuckle. “I guess when you put it that way, it’s not so bad.”
“It really isn’t,” Amelia says. She glances at the sky. “Plus, we already know where the settlement is, right? If it’s really as secure as they claim, it should still be there by the time we arrive.”
The nagging doubt returns, curling in my stomach before clawing its way up to my chest. “But what if it isn’t?” I whisper. My eyes drop to the ground. “What is I’m leading us all into a trap?”
“Then we’ll go into the trap together,” Amelia says firmly. “And we’ll fight our way out together too.”
“How can you be so sure?”
She smiles grimly. “Because we have to, so we will.”
Final Comments: I wasn’t sure how to finish this one…
