Take Ten to Write

“The Non-Sound of Silence”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

“Can you please close the door?”

Silence.

I need complete and utter silence in order to do absolutely anything. And when I mean absolutely anything, I mean absolutely, positively anything and everything. Yes, EVERYTHING!

Which means that right now, I am in complete silence. I am alone in my room and wearing noise-cancelling headphones to block out any and all possible sound.

Of course, I can usually function fairly well with my noise-cancelling headphones. But, there’s one thing that makes a sound that even noise-cancelling headphones can’t block out.

Eating.

Eating is a straight-up nightmare. Whenever my teeth move, I can hear it. Whenever the food crunches, I can hear it. Whenever I swallow, I can hear it.

Eating is just the worst.

There’s no escaping noise when I eat. And trust me, I’ve tried everything. I’ve tried soup, but there’s that awful slurping noise when you swallow. I’ve tried bread, but there’s still the sound of teeth hitting each other.

Basically, at this point, the only thing that I can eat are popsicles and ice cream. I mean, hey, I’m not complaining. I’ve got to say, though, it is a pain when I’m really hungry but I’m out of the house. Because popsicles and ice cream aren’t exactly the easiest to carry around.

But, I mean, I make do. As long as I have my silence, I’m as happy as can be.

Final Comments: I really had no idea what to do with this prompt… So, here’s what happened.
