“The Nest”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Where’s the _____?”
“Where’s the nest?” Bertie whispers, her face pressed up right next to mine.
“Uh, well, I can’t really tell,” I mutter as best as I can with her cheek smooshing mine. “But, um, would you mind giving me a bit of space?”
“Huh? Oh, right, sorry.”
She takes a step back but continues craning her neck to see over my shoulder.
“Here,” I sigh, shuffling to the side, “come take my place.”
Her eyes light up and she bounces up and down on her heels as she rejoins me. She searches the trees, watching for every tiny flicker of movement possible. Finally, she releases a frustrated sigh.
“It’s not here,” she huffs.
“Well, maybe we should just give it a second,” I say slowly.
She turns to me with a frown. “‘We should give it a second’? What, like the nest is going to come walking out at us? Dude, it’s a nest! It can’t move!”
“It could if the baby birds all stuck their legs out the bottom and walked together,” I mutter.
Final Comments: I didn’t know what to write…
