“The Metal Room”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
“Wow, it’s so shiny,” Antoine says, his eyes wide as he stares around this strange room we’ve found ourselves in.
Long, metal tubes hang from the ceiling, jutting out at various lengths. Every once in a while, one of them slides down even further, making me jump.
I swallow a lump in my throat. “Yes, it is,” I agree. “Now can we please get out of here? There’s something about this place that just doesn’t sit right with me.”
Antoine rolls his eyes. “Come on, Annette, loosen up. Just live in the moment and appreciate the beauty of where we are for once.”
“That’s not in my instincts,” I mutter. “Please can we go?”
“Just one more minute,” Antoine says, not even flinching as one of the tubes slides down right over his head. “Do you think these things will ever slide all the way down and fall onto the ground?”
I shake my head. “I don’t know. Look, I’m going to wait for you outside, okay?”
“Uh huh,” Antoine says, not even looking at me.
I race out of the strange room, my legs trembling and barely able to keep me up. I skid to a stop outside and take a few deep breaths to calm my pounding heart.
Suddenly, the entire world shakes. I look up and my heart drops; it’s one of those giants. A baby giant, yes, but still a giant.
It runs straight toward the room I’d just been standing in. Without hesitation, it plunges its hand downward, making the metal spikes shoot downward.
“NO!” I scream as I race back toward the room as fast as my six legs can carry me.
Final Comments: My idea was that there were two ants who were standing under one of those Pin Art toys. I didn’t do a great job at describing that though…
