Take Ten to Write

“The Job Pt. 2”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Additional Note: While this story can be read by itself, it is a continuation of yesterday’s Take Ten to Write story. Therefore, it would be beneficial to read The Job first.

Prompt: “Whatever”

She couldn’t believe that he would actually blackmail her. They’d grown up together, for crying out loud! They used to play together as children and dream about travelling the universe together in their very own starship. He’d been her first true love, her first glimpse into happiness.

But maybe that’s where it had all gone wrong. She’d fallen for him, but he obviously hadn’t felt the same way.

She shook her head to clear away the memories. Whatever. It was all in the past anyway.

Still she watched his retreating back until it disappeared from view. She took a deep breath and adjusted her navigation system to account for her new pit stop.

The little brown box felt so heavy in her pocket. She pulled it out and set it on the chair beside her. Of course she felt the usual urge to open the package, but she knew better. They’d be able to tell if she’d lifted even the corner of the tape sealing the box.

As she prepared for takeoff, a call appeared on her screen. She let out a sigh of annoyance; she really wasn’t in the mood to talk to her boss at the moment.

Still, she knew that he’d be able to tell if she was screening his calls. Reluctantly, she pushed ‘accept’.

Final Comments: This prompt just fit so easily with yesterday’s story!
