“The Eternal Rule”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Write a story titled “The Eternal Rule”.
The Eternal Rule is simple: Trust no one.
Obviously, it’s much easier said than done. One usually finds themselves trusting someone at one point or another. If there was no trust, nothing would get done.
Still, one doesn’t dare break the Rule for too long; if trust persists, everything that was built would become undone. After all, I think it’s safe to say that people can’t be trusted. Just look at all the stories. You know, the really famous ones. Betrayal is always present, guaranteed.
So, the Rule was written. Trust no one.
I can’t say that it’s a perfect rule. I often find that it makes my life miserable. To be honest, I couldn’t tell you the last time I slept in the same vicinity as another human being. I’ve never eaten food that had the possibility of being tampered with by someone. I’ve never even made a simple business deal with anyone.
Needless to say, the Eternal Rule has given me a lonely, miserable life. But at least it’s a life.
Final Comments: I couldn’t think of a synonym for ‘miserable’…
