“The Dirt Angel”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Philippa Williams, 30, individual angel — character-generator.org.uk
I never really knew Philippa Williams too well. She was an angel in the Earth department, while I was in the Faresia department. I mostly heard stories about her various travels and acts of heroism. Honestly, I was fairly enamoured with the prospect of being as well-travelled as she was. I guess she was older than I was—30,000 years old—so it was quite reasonable that she had so much experience. Yet, I was still jealous. I still am jealous too.
Okay, let me just say that she was dearly loved by everyone here in Heaven. She was the first angel to actually go down to Earth herself and interact with the animals there. She said that the humans were especially interesting, which of course we already knew since they were the ones who were bombarded with daily prayers by them. Of coruse, the other animals would send us messages as well, but I would classify humans as being especially needy.
I wish that I had been an angel when Philippa made her first trip to Earth. Now that would have been exciting to hear about. I heard that they also had a huge welcome back party for her, which my friends told me about. The last big party that we had was for Friddick. He faded, you see, and it was an incredibly joyous occasion. He helped so many creatures!
Alright, I guess I’m getting a bit off topic. Back to Philippa. Again, I’ll say that I was jealous of her extensive experience regarding humans. I had always been extremely fascinated by their ways, but I was restricted to caring for dirt.
Yes, you heard me. Dirt.
Apparently dirt is extremely important on Faresia, so I was in charge of making sure that every grain of dirt was well accounted for on the planet. Sure, it was a lousy job—I only got a break every two hundred years or so—but it was a job. I much preferred being the dirt manager than getting incinerated. Just thinking about it gives me shivers.
I made it my mission to be able to talk to Philippa one day and ask her about her adventures. Oh, how I would love to see an actual human. I think that it would be incredible to finally see exactly how odd they really are.
My two best friends, Yann and Berilla, got to visit Earth too. They recently got promoted, so they get to be part of the plant department now. Okay, honestly, I’d just love to be in any department other than dirt. Sure, I’m in charge here, but it’s an incredibly monotonous job.
So, that’s why I’m here now. At the portal to Earth, about to step through and see humans for the very first time. And to be completely honest, I don’t plan on ever returning.
Final Comments: Okay, first off, I have no idea where the dirt came from. It kind of just popped into my mind, so there it is. Secondly, this one was pretty fun to write. I noticed that I got off topic a lot (which isn’t a bad thing), but for the purpose of this story, I actually had a clear vision of how I wanted it to end, so I tried getting it back on track. This one might be in need of a follow-up, so stay tuned!
