“The Crystal Keepers”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
It is said that the Crystal Keepers were once simple men and women. Each completed a feat of strength to acquire their crystal and obtain the power they now possess.
Lord Kyrrinar, Ruler of Inovius and Keeper of the Jiminthar Crystal, climbed the tallest mountain in a simple tunic. He had no shoes, no food, no water. He had only his belief and his determination. It took him a full two weeks, yet he prevailed. His sponsor, the Goddess of Resolve, rewarded him with the Jiminthar Crystal and the land we know today as Inovius.
Lady Shilli, Ruler of Hrith and Keeper of the Mellin Crystal, defended her village single-handedly against the army of a greater city. As she lay, her last breathe about to leave her body, the God of Compassion granted her the Mellin Crystal, therefore restoring her body and her life. Many years later, Lady Shilli saved the God of Compassion himself, for which she was granted the throne of Hrith.
Lady Nyira, Ruler of Gorandor and Keeper of the Erithian Crystal, willingly sacrificed her own freedom to protect her family. She endured countless years of torment at cruel hands, her desire to protect her family the only force supporting her life. When she was finally freed, the Goddess of Loyalty rewarded her bravery with the Erithian Crystal and promised the land of Gorandor to her and her family.
Finally, Lord Yinthor, Ruler of Anar and Keeper of the Wor Crystal, openly opposed the king of his homeland to protect the truth that he had discovered. Even when none other would believe him, he held onto the truth. The God of Justice intervened to help him and provided him with the Wor Crystal so that he could speak the truth. Today, he rules Anar to protect its truth.
Together, the Crystal Keepers kept the peace between the four Provinces. Even though they have faded into memory, their thrones will remain theirs until one dares oppose them.
It is in my humble opinion that that time has come. The Crystal Keepers are mere myths, stories made up to scare youth into behaving.
The thrones are open, and they’re ours for the taking.
Final Comments: Yes, I did go slightly over the ten minutes, but I was having a lot of fun writing it! I’m not really happy with the legends, but I enjoyed imagining the narrator walking down a hallway of tapestries of each Keeper, telling their stories and thinking of ways to take the thrones…
