Take Ten to Write

“The Case of the Missing Case”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Case.

“What did it look like?”

I groan and put my face in my hands. “I… I don’t know. It was, like, red, or maybe green, no wait, I think it was orange.”

Melanie sighs. “Honestly, Jess, do you even want your case back?”

“Yes!” I exclaim. “Yes, I do. Look, I’m sorry that my memory isn’t the best, but I’m trying my best here.”

I feel a hand begin to rub my back. “I know. But seriously, Jess, can you maybe try a tiny bit harder? The colour shouldn’t be that hard to remember.”

“It’s just that I’ve changed cases probably twenty times in the past month. All the ones I used before were so horrible and they just shattered whenever I dropped my phone. This one was the only one that withstood the stair test.”

“The stair test?”

“Yeah, when I drop my phone down a flight of stairs. This was the only case that didn’t break, and I can’t even remember its stupid colour!”

“Why was your case even off your phone in the first place?”

I sit back with a huff. “I was cleaning my phone and I got distracted by something and walked off with my phone not in its case. When I finally remembered, I came back and it was just gone.”

Melanie stood up. “Okay, well maybe you’ll remember what it looked like when we find it. It couldn’t have gotten far right? Phone cases don’t have legs after all.”

I know she’s trying to lighten the mood with a silly little joke, but I’m just not having it.

“Fine, let’s go look,” I grumble.

Final Comments: Ugh, I got absolutely no inspiration from this prompt.
