“The Bag”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Plastic bag.

A plastic bag. That’s the only thing that truly belonged to me. Everything else had been given or donated to me; that plastic bag was the only thing that I had actually bought with my own money.

Mind you, it wasn’t one of those plastic bags that you get for free from a grocery store when you’re checking out. It was one of those nice, durable, reusable plastic bags that are maybe a dollar fifty each.

That was about all I could afford, and I spent it on a plastic bag.

I was starving and so I went to the supermarket. With only two dollars in my pocket, there was no way that I would be able to afford even half an apple.

So, I wandered around. I took a single free sample from each stall and struck up friendly conversations with whoever was willing. I didn’t tell anyone about my situation; I would’ve felt bad to have them spend their hard-earned money on me.

But then, I saw the bag. It had been shoved to the side, and was lying on its side right beside its stand. Its corner was crumpled and it had been stepped on a few times.

Before I knew it, my two dollars were gone. I walked out of that store with my new plastic bag, feeling happier than I had in weeks.

Final Comments: I want to go back and rewrite this one in the plastic bag’s POV now…
