Take Ten to Write

“The Accusation”

Prompt: “Cookie jar”.

“JACKSON DAVIS!”

My pencil skids across the page, slicing through the last step of the math problem I’d been working on for the past thirty minutes.

Footsteps pound in the hallway and my door slams open. I turn slowly to see Tom standing there, eyes blazing with a fury I haven’t seen since he lost the Phoenix Tournament last year. One hand is clenched tightly in a fist; the other is clutching a lidless cookie jar.

“What?” I snap with a bit more bite than I had intended. I take a steadying breath before adding, “I’m sort of busy right now.”

Tom’s eyes narrow. He launches the cookie jar at me and, miraculously, I catch it.

“You ate it,” he says, his voice shockingly soft for the accusation he’s making. “You promised you’d save it for me, and then you went and ate it anyway.”

I blink. Once. Twice.

“I’m sorry, you’re upset because you think I ate the last cookie? Are you serious?”
