“That Little Voice”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.” — E. Joseph Cossman
“Don’t look down!”
I let out a high-pitched whine. “My eyes are closed and I’m not opening them until I get to the other side!”
“Good! Because you really don’t want to do that right now.”
A chill runs through me as I have the sudden urge to open my eyes.
“Don’t do it!”
My eyelids tremble. I can’t take it anymore.
I open my eyes.
The world seems to shrink below me. Everything looks so small, so far away.
And I’m absolutely terrified.
I clutch at the ropes, holding on desperately. I’m going to fall. That’ll be it. No more me.
“Remember the treasure…”
That’s right. The treasure. The whole reason I came out here.
Darn that little voice in my mind.
Final Comments: For some reason I had a really hard time thinking of strong descriptions for this one.
