“Sunlight”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
The sunlight peeked over the hills, playfully swatting away the lingering stars. Golden light washed over the valley, drifting between trees, caressing them.
At the river, it hopped gracefully over the soft ripples, spreading its brightness down into the very depths of the water. It nudged the fish awake, nuzzled against the furled leaves of the water lilies, burrowed down into the dirt to join the snails.
With a sudden burst of energy, it sprang from the water, shaking sparkling droplets of water into the air. It joined the birds, flew with them, sang with them. It tumbled in the wind, zipping through the air, spreading its warmth over the entire world.
The lightness of the air caused it to drift slowly back to solid ground. The early grazers nibbled on the fronds of grass before closing their tired eyes to its joyful arrival. It knew that they wanted it gone, but it didn’t want to leave anyone out of the joyousness of a new day.
Before long, it had covered as much land as it could reach. It sat back with a contented sigh, watching over its land with a bright smile.
Final Comments: Honestly, it felt really good writing with a prompt again.
