Take Ten to Write

“Summer Nights”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Write a story titled “Summer Nights”.

When I was young, I used to go swimming every summer night. That was actually how I met your father. We met every night at the ocean and swam together under the light of the moon.

Of course, he would need to help me to make sure that I didn’t drown. He would create this massive air bubble that somehow never popped that I would sit inside. I would be able to swim around and move like normal, but I would still be able to breathe.

I’ve got to tell you, it was just the most marvelous thing ever, being able to swim underwater forever. I saw so many magnificent creatures and rock formations. I know, rock formations might not sound especially exciting to you. You would’ve had to be there to witness it for yourself to understand.

We would visit these caves that hid just the most beautiful minerals. They projected from all surfaces of these caves and reflected in the water spectacularly. It was like a rainbow had exploded in the sea and you could bathe in it.

My engagement ring was actually made from a stone that your father took from that cave. I remember the day he proposed. He brought me down to that very cave and knelt in front of me. I said yes before he even said a word.

So, today, I thought I’d bring you to that very cave. Even though your father isn’t here, you inherited his unique abilities, so breathing underwater shouldn’t be a problem for you.

There’s another world under the ocean, and I’m so excited to be able to share this part of your life with you.

Final Comments: I really didn’t like the ending of this one… Also, somehow everything I write ends up having a fantastical element to it.
