“Someday”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Quote prompt: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

“Ivana Northridge!”

My heart starts pounding when I hear my name being called. I stand up and quickly make my way to the front of the auditorium. Everyone’s eyes are on me and I absolutely love it. I’m finally getting the recognition that I deserve. And I’m going to cherish every single second of it.

When I reach the stage, I climb the stairs gracefully and smile broadly up at the host—a red-and-blue Delta-Omega-Gamma robot—in front of me. He looks down at me, expressionless as always, but it’s the award in his hand that catches my eye.

The Award of Technological Excellence. I’ve had my eye on it since the day I first laid eyes on it. Now, my name will be forever inscribed in a plaque on its base.

“Miss Northridge,” the robot says, “congratulations.”

He hands me the Award and my smile grows even wider. Applause breaks out among the crowd and I hear my name being chanted over and over.

“Ivana! Ivana! Ivana!”

I let out a deep sigh. I wish that this moment could last forever. It just feels so incredibly good to gain an affirmation for all the hard work that I’ve done. For everything that I’ve accomplished.

I look down at the Award in my hands. The beautiful golden trophy is covered in ornate swirls and embossed with the letters ‘AOTE’. It feels so solid in my hands.

Almost as if it’s real.

I let out another deep sigh and let the Award drop. It disappears before it reaches the ground.

I turn to Delta-Omega-Gamma and give him the voice command, “Terminate simulation.”

Immediately, the world around me flickers. I watch as my audience of robots stands as a single unit and proceeds back to their charging stations.

I smile up at Delta-Omega-Gamma.

“Thanks, buddy,” I whisper. His blank eyes stare back at me. “Someday, this will be us.”

He nods and repeats, “Someday.”

Final Comments: This one was fun to write! I found that the beginning was a bit choppy style-wise, but I really enjoyed imagining how the plot would play out.
