“Singing At Twilight”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: Write a story titled “Singing at Twilight”.

Their voices rang out, clear and bright in the falling darkness. Harmonies interlaced together, the notes weaving through each other perfectly. Not a single note was out of tune; it was perfection.

But then he came along. He burst his way through the trees, drawn to the sweet melody. His nostrils flared; he could smell it. The music, it was calling him.

As he stomped through the trees, the creatures above were jostled by the tremors vibrating through the soil. One by one, they scattered. They took their notes with them until the last flutter of wings disappeared and there was silence.

Alone, he stood under the canopy of trees. He looked up to see the bare branches waving at him.

They had taken their melody with them, but he wasn’t worried. He had his own.

He opened his mouth and started singing. It started as a soft hum, just air gently blowing through his lips.

But soon, it grew into a full song. The notes became full and confident as he bellowed to the moon.

Hidden deep in the canopy of leaves, the creatures cowering from the horrible beast raised their ears. They had never heard such a beautiful melody before.

One by one, they returned. Cautiously, at first, they crept forward. Then, they joined him.

As the sun waved good-bye, the song rose with the moon.

Final Comments: Just before I finished this one, I realized that this might make a good picture book.
