Take Ten to Write

“Sam the Nitwittle”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

The sky is green.

I’ve heard stories of fantastical worlds from far away. Worlds that are on the backs of turtles. Worlds that float around the sun. Worlds that are within other worlds.

I’ve heard stories of others who have ventured out to those other worlds. Explorers, adventurers, pioneers. I’ve heard their tales and dreamed of those worlds.

But I’m happy here, in my own world. My world is so much more beautiful than any of the others that I’ve heard of.

I love waking up in the morning and breathing in the fresh air. I look up at the sky and admire the swirls of pastel green flowing along the air currents. Those are nitwittles–small, schooling creatures who use the air currents to get around. The sky is usually filled with them, and while some might find them annoying, I quite enjoy their company. I find that they’re extremely good listeners–at least, most of the time they’re great listeners.

Once, I met a nitwittle who just wouldn’t stop talking. His name was Sam and he was just about the cutest little thing I’d ever seen. Unfortunately, he only stayed for a day before he had to continue on with his family on their journey to find food.

I never saw him again, but I like to think that he’s somewhere out there with a plump belly, riding the air currents to his heart’s content.

Final Comments: Full disclosure: my brain is complete mush right now from writing midterms. While I don’t really like how this story turned out, I’m glad I still wrote something today.
