“Sally the Sheep”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Sheep.
Sally nibbled on the cloud in front of her. She absolutely loved the taste of cloud; she couldn’t imagine eating anything better. Well, other than grass of course. But grass didn’t grow in the sky, so Sally would need to wait until the next time she was on the ground.
“Sally?”
She looked up to see Steven trotting toward her.
“What can I do for you?” she asked, ever polite to her boss.
“You’re needed in Pasture 2A,” he told her, his voice short and stern. “Now.”
Sally nodded. “Right away, sir.”
Instantly, she started galloping toward Pasture 2A. It was quite a ways from where she had been grazing–she had been all the way down in Pasture 24T–but nonetheless, she hurried on her way.
Eventually, she reached Pasture 2A. Sally was sure thankful that she couldn’t get tired here; if she had been on the ground, she would’ve collapsed on the spot!
A slightly larger sheep came over to her. “Are you Sally?”
Sally nodded. “Yes, ma’am. Steven told me to report here.”
The other sheep beckoned for Sally to follow her. “Yes, that’s right. I’m Samantha. One of my workers came down with a cold this morning and so we have an empty post. You were first on the list for substitutes today.”
Sally nodded again. That made sense; she usually volunteered for the substitute list, even though substitutes were rarely needed.
“You will be in Position 7,” Samantha said, “behind Sergei and in front of Sonya.”
Sally fell into place between the two sheep that Samantha had mentioned, baaing a quick hello to each one.
“Are you all ready?” Samantha called to the line of sheep in front of her.
Sally baaed a resounding “Yes!” along with the rest of the sheep beside her.
“Alright, fall in!” Samantha shouted.
She disappeared through the cloud, leading the way to the ground. Sally followed eagerly behind Sergei, enjoying the rush of air blowing through her wool.
Sally absolutely loved her job. And to think that the night was only just beginning…
Final Comments: Sheep! I love sheep… I had a lot of fun writing this one. Maybe Sally will have more adventures in the future…
