Take Ten to Write

“Safe Now”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Music prompt: “Particles” by Tony Anderson

She peeks out shyly from behind the trees, her silver hair falling gracefully in front of her face. Piercing green eyes stare back at me, wide and curious. She knows who I am. She just doesn’t know why I’m here.

I take a step toward her and she darts back behind the tree. I stop, letting the leaves settle around me, and she reappears, cocking her head slightly as she watches me.

I hold out a hand to her. She has no reason to be afraid. Not anymore. Those men are gone, I made sure of it.

I call to her, telling her that she’s safe, that she can come out now. I make no move toward her, but kneel in the dirt so that we can see eye-to-eye. She watches me, unblinking, as I wait patiently for her to make the first move.

Finally, she does. She takes a small, trembling step out from behind the tree. I leave my hand hovering and stretched out to her. Slowly, she makes her way to me.

Her small hand clasps mine, only able to hold onto my thumb. I smile at her and receive the smallest of smiles back. I slowly close my fingers around hers and let her become comfortable with my touch. I need her to understand that I won’t hurt her, that she’s safe with me.

Her eyes search mine, trying to understand why the crown prince would come for her. She must think that I have some ulterior motive, that I want to claim her and her powers for my own use.

But I don’t. I truly don’t. I’m not my brother, nor my father. If I can protect this little girl, then I will. Even if it means leaving my own family.

Final Comments: I really hate how I ended this one… I’m also a bit disappointed at how little imagery I wrote in because the music gave me so much to work with. However, I actually had a somewhat clear idea of what plot I wanted to write (yay!).
