“Running”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Music prompt: “Run” by OneRepublic

“Who are you running from?”

I raise an eyebrow as I turn to face the girl. “That’s a pretty personal question to be asking a complete stranger.”

She shrugs. “Not really. Most people around these parts are running from someone, so don’t think you’re special or anything.”

We drive over a particularly deep pothole and my head slams against the side of the truck.

“Hey, watch it!” the girl shouts, banging on the separator between us and the driver. A muffled ‘Sorry’ comes through the thin metal. She turns back to me. “So?”

“So what?”

She lets out an exaggerated sigh. “Listen, we’re giving you free passage to a completely hidden colony. The least you can do is tell me who you’re running from.”

I hesitate. If I tell her the truth, there’s no way she’ll bring me to the safe haven.

Final Comments: I know that the song itself means something completely different, but this was the first thing I thought of.
