“Red Towel”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Write a story titled “Red Towel”.

Okay, here’s the thing: I’m a towel.

Yes, I’m a towel like those things you use to wipe your hands after you wash them. I soak up all the water from your hands so that you’re not dripping it everywhere as you go about your lives.

But something happened to me. I’ve been defiled, destroyed, desecrated.

And I blame you.

Okay, here’s what happened. Just yesterday, I was a gorgeous white. I was the bathroom beauty, the main attraction of the entire room. You had used me already for quite some time, and I quickly realized that it was time for that weekly ritual we have where you pick me up and give me a wash for a change.

Honestly, it’s a bit of a strange concept. I mean, aren’t I there for you to clean your hands, not the other way around?

Anyway, back to my story, the important story here.

So, as I was saying, yesterday, I was a beautiful white. I was pure white, not a speck of grey in sight.

But then this ritual happened. Except something went wrong. You threw me into a basket with others who I’ve never seen before.

A family of red towels.

Immediately, I knew that something was wrong. I’d never seen a red towel so close in real life before.

And then, when the ritual was over, I came out feeling awful. I knew that something was off, but I couldn’t quite place it.

It was only when I returned to my home in the bathroom that I realized what had happened.

My beautiful white coat wasn’t white anymore. I was red.

Final Comments: While I had an idea for the plot when I first saw the prompt, for some reason, I had a hard time actually writing it...
