Prompt: Midnight.

It was midnight, but to him, it was still bright out. His eyes flickered back and forth between the moving figures before him. He searched in the night, but none of them were her. She wasn’t there yet.

With a sigh, he leaned back against the tree trunk as he continued his silent watch. It wasn’t unusual for her to be late, but he found it annoying. To him, it was a sign that she wasn’t taking their relationship seriously. At least, not anymore.

He remembered the time when she had rushed to their meeting place after work. He made sure that he always arrived early so that he could greet her with flowers and a coffee. She would thank him and they would go off on whatever activity they had planned for that day.

Then, gradually, she had started becoming later and later. She said that it was just work, that they had a big project and that she couldn’t help it. She said that she wanted nothing more than to be there with him, in his arms, under the night sky.

Well, it was very much into the night now, and she still wasn’t there. He sighed again; maybe this was the last time. Maybe she had finally come to her senses and realized that she was much too good for him. Maybe…

But there! A spot of red among the browns and greys of the rest of the world. She was hurrying down the street, clutching her coat tightly around herself.

He jumped from the tree to greet her as she came crashing into his arms.
