Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

“At least the views are nice,” I say with a shrug, staring out the window. “Sure, we see the same thing every day, but at least we aren’t looking at a bunch of boring, grey buildings all the time.”

I glance back to see him standing near the doorway, arms crossed tightly over his chest, big scowl on his face.

“Oh, come on,” I sigh, rolling my eyes. “You’re acting like this is your first time in prison.”

“This is my first time in prison,” he mutters, hugging himself even tighter.

“Wait, seriously?”

“Yes.”

I raise an eyebrow and stride over to him. “So, just to be super clear, you’re telling me that a guy like you has never been to prison before?”

“No. Why?”

“Oh, no reason. I just heard about the job you pulled, and if that really was your first, then I’ll admit that I’m impressed.”

His scowl deepens.

“Just saying,” I purr, “a guy with your talents could make it big here. The two of us could be running this whole place in no time.”

“What makes you think I want to run the place? What if I just want to keep my head down and serve my time?”

I scoff. “Sure, and I want to be the King of England. But we can’t all get what we want…” I pause and turn to him, raising an eyebrow. “Or can we…?”

Final Comments: I actually had a lot of fun with this one. I wasn’t totally sure what I wanted to do with the characterization at the beginning, but after writing for a bit, I think I settled into it.
