“Perfection”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
The cool air rushes past me, stinging my cheeks and bringing tears to my eyes. And yet, we keep flying upward, toward the mass of swirling clouds. My ears begin to burn, but I don’t dare let go of the saddle to cover them. Frostbite is a risk I’m willing to take.
The clouds approach, much faster than I was expecting. Suddenly, we’re in them, weaving through the misty greyness. My clothes become plastered to my body; I’m glad now that he told me to wear goggles.
I let out a deep breath. The air from my body swirls in the clouds before joining the mist.
“Get ready,” he rumbles in my head.
I tighten my grip on the saddle and feel his muscles bunch beneath me.
With a roar, he bursts through the clouds. A gasp escapes from my lips; the view is beautiful beyond imagination.
Pink and purple streak the sky, broken only by the bright rays of the sinking sun. There are no stray clouds above the layer that we just exited, allowing for a perfectly clear view of the sunset. In the distance, I can make out a few birds joining us in our viewing. I envy them for being able to see this every evening.
“So? What do you think?”
I let out a deep sigh and sit back in the saddle. “It’s perfection.”
Final Comments: I had a really fun time writing this one. It’s been a while since I’ve written something more description-based; my work lately has been mostly plot- and action-oriented. So this was a lot of fun!
