“Perfect Pair”

Prompt: Socks.
My love…
I’m so sorry.
I never meant to be separated from you,
The current was just too strong.
The waves tore at me,
Clawing, shoving, battering.
I tried with all my strength to hold on,
To hold you, any part of you, all of you.
But it wasn’t enough.
Before I knew it, you were gone.
As I coughed up what water was left in my body,
All I could think of was you.
Lost and alone
Out in that big, scary world.
Even though I’ve been paired with others,
My heart longs for you.
I dream of your touch, of your presence,
of your laughter as we walk side-by-side.
I miss you,
My perfect pair.
Final Comments: I’m not sure what it says about me that the first thing I thought of when I saw this prompt was sock puppets…
