Take Ten to Write

“Party Dress Code”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Polka dots, cupcakes, and roses.” — suggested by Mary

“We’re going to be late!” Penelope called, running into the room. “Has anyone seen my polka dot skirt?”

“Do you really need that skirt?” Diamond asked with a frown. “You’ve got twenty other skirts in your closet; just wear one of those.”

“Valentina was very specific about what to wear,” Penelope replied, still darting around, checking under all the pillows. She stopped for a moment to stare at Diamond. “Is that seriously what you’re wearing, by the way?”

Diamond looked down at her own outfit. “This is my favourite dress,” she said. “Why, is something wrong with it?”

Penelope hesitated. “Well, no,” she said. “It’s just that roses were popular last season. Polka dots are the new roses, is what I’m trying to say.”

“Oh.”

While Diamond stared down at her dress, contemplating whether she should change, Penelope ducked down behind the couch. She reappeared a moment later, triumphantly waving her polka dot skirt above her head.

Peggy poked her head in through the door to find the other two girls still in their casual clothes.

“Seriously, hurry up, we’re going to be late!” she snapped. “We still need to pick up the cupcakes before going to Valentina’s!”

Final Comments: It’s so hard for me to write in past tense now… I automatically switched back to present at times by mistake and had to correct it.
