“Only She Remained”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: Write a story titled “Only She Remained”.
It was procrastination that had saved her life.
It all began the morning of her big meeting. No, actually, it began way before that. It began the day she was told about her big meeting.
She was put in charge of the meeting, which she wasn’t thrilled about. Being in charge meant having to do a lot of work. She didn’t like to work. So, she procrastinated. She pushed the meeting to the very back of her mind and went out to all her friends’ parties. She went to every karaoke night and sang her heart out. She went to the club and danced until her feet were covered in blisters. She went to the mall and bought everything she laid her eyes on.
She didn’t think about her big meeting once. At least, not until the night before.
She stayed up that entire night, perfecting the bullet points on her slideshow and rewriting and rewriting and rewriting her notes until they resembled something that almost made sense.
And then she fell asleep. She slept through her alarm. She slept through the sirens blaring outside. She slept through her big meeting. She even slept through the asteroid that hit her office building.
Final Comments: I’ve been writing a lot about the beginnings and ends of the world lately I think…
