Take Ten to Write

“One-Eyed Girl”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

“Who are you?” Wyrdren asked, mouth slightly agape as he stared at the girl.

She stared back at him, her single golden eye unblinking. It seemed that she either didn’t understand what he was saying–he was speaking in High Akkran after all–or she was simply too smart to answer. Regardless, Wyrdren couldn’t help but feel the same discomfort he felt whenever he met an individual with golden eyes. This time, however, he felt the added discomfort of seeing not only such a young girl with only one golden eye, but also a Bleacher. Her white hair stuck to her equally pale cheeks, held fast by both grime and sweat.

Wyrdren decided to try his luck with another dialect. Eastern Akkran was much more commonly understood throughout the Provinces, as that was where the main trading ports were located.

“Who are you?” he repeated, wincing at the rusty accent of his East Akkran. He hadn’t had to communicate in the dialect in some time, and it was surely showing. “Can you understand me?”

The girl continued staring. Wyrdren could swear that he hadn’t seen the girl blink once since he had cornered her. Perhaps that was another reason why he felt as if he should be prepared to run at any moment.

The girl’s eye twitched to the side. The simple movement caught Wyrdren off guard and he instinctively turned his head to make sure that no one was approaching his unprotected back.

Nothing was there. It was still just him and the girl.

He turned back and his jaw clenched in frustration. Now it was just him.

Final Comments: I had a map drawn up at some point… I should really find it again for reference. On another note, I’m still really enjoying writing these little fantasy excerpts!
