“Once There Were Dragons”

Prompt: “Freedom is never given; it is won.” — A. Philip Randolph

They say that these lands used to belong to dragons. Believe me, I didn’t believe it at first either. In fact, I laughed when they told me. I mean dragons? Really? Couldn’t have been tigers or gorillas or something else more believable?

But when they told me the legend, everything made sense. It went something like this:

The dragons used to rule over the entire planet. Even though they were at the top of the food chain, they made sure to maintain a balance among all living creatures. They knew when to kill and when to show mercy. They were generous but fair. They stood for justice, for all things good.

But then, along came the humans. The very first humans were eaten immediately, because the dragons knew that they would cause trouble. Unfortunately, a couple of humans slipped through their claws. These two humans went on to create their entire species. And yet, they hid in the shadows of the dragons. They knew that as soon as they were spotted, they would be killed.

In secret, they began formulating their plan. They would overthrow the dragons and claim their freedom.

Final Comments: This was a really fun one to write!
