“Old Enemies”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
The Fire swirls upward, a column of bright red and orange, intertwined and in a pattern that seems both intentional and completely haphazard all at once. Just when it seems as if it’s going to disappear from view up into the clouds, the flames explode, shooting off into a fountain of tendrils. They rush back down to the ground, splashing magnificently as soon as they collide with the Earth. The Fire simmers for a moment longer before sizzling out into nothingness.
Immediately, applause rings out, echoing throughout the Stadium. Yet another flawless performance from the legendary Fire Guardian.
Suddenly, thunder rumbles across the sky. The clouds turn from fluffy and white to black, streaked with crackles of lightning. The crowd cries out; there wasn’t supposed to be a storm.
Dark laughter echoes through the clouds, emphasized by claps of thunder. The clouds begin to move, swirling together to create a new pattern. They form a thick blanket over the Stadium, leaving not even a hint of open sky.
The Fire Guardian looks up, eyes narrowed, jaw clenched, fists bunched together at his sides. That laughter… He knows it all too well.
Without warning, he raises his hand, releasing both a battle cry and a stream of Fire toward the darkened sky.
Final Comments: Honestly, I think that this is one of my favourites out of the 635 stories that I’ve written. It’s very closely related to one of my WIPs, so maybe that’s why I found it so fun to write.
