“No One Can Know”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Write a story titled “No One Can Know”.
My heart beats fast in my chest as I crouch in the darkness. The Treasure feels heavy in my hands. I clutch it to my chest to keep it safe. We traveled so far and overcame so many obstacles to get this Treasure. There’s no way I’m letting it go now.
A rustle of movement draws my attention. I peer through the darkness, trying to see exactly what it is.
No, not what. Who. It’s Lieutenant Thunder.
“Captain Lightning,” he whispers, “is the coast clear?”
I scan the area around us carefully before nodding. “All clear,” I reply quietly. “Let’s go.”
Together, we crawl through the cave. I keep my shoulder against one wall to make sure that we don’t get lost.
We crawl for what feels like forever, but I know that we can’t risk standing; the monster might see us.
Suddenly, I stop. I hear something. Footsteps.
I shove the Treasure at Lieutenant Thunder. “Quick, hide it! The monster is coming!”
Lieutenant Thunder slips the Treasure under a rock before pulling out his sword. “Don’t worry, Captain Lightning, I’ll protect you!”
Bravely, he crawls in front of me. My heart beats even faster as I search the darkness for the slightest flicker of movement.
Suddenly, a bright light erupts in the cave. I let out a pained scream. With my eyes squeezed tightly shut, I hear Lieutenant Thunder yell as he attacks the monster.
Then, silence.
I slowly open my eyes. Lieutenant Thunder is lying on the ground in front of me. He’s not moving.
I rush to his side and let out a wail. My best friend, my lieutenant, is dead.
A tap on my shoulder scares me and I let out a startled squeak. I grab Lieutenant Thunder’s sword and spin around, ready to face the monster that killed my friend.
“Alright, Nathan, that’s enough. It’s time for bed,” Mom says, looking down at me with an amused smile.
I pout. “But I was just going to fight the monster that killed Lieutenant Thunder!” I protest.
Behind me, Lieutenant Thunder sits up. “Mom’s right,” he chuckles. “It’s late. I’m sure that the monster can wait until tomorrow.”
I let out a sigh. “Fine.”
Dad grins and scoops me up into his arms. “Come on now, let’s get you to bed.”
As he carries me upstairs, I whisper into his ear, “Lieutenant Thunder, you have to remember where you put the Treasure. No one can know, okay?”
He chuckles. “Okay.”
“Pinkie promise?” I whisper.
He smiles at me. “Pinkie promise.”
Final Comments: I really enjoyed writing this one. I’ll admit that I went over the ten minutes a tiny bit… But I was just enjoying myself too much!!
