“New Wings”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Prompt: “A mermaid princess has fairy wings.” — suggested by Mary
I don’t know how this happened, but I woke up this morning with strange protrusions coming from my back. Knowing my luck, I was probably cursed by another sea witch or something, but then again, I’m not totally sure that this is a curse.
The protrusions stemmed from my back, just between my shoulder blades. They were heavy, weighing me down on my bed as I tried to get up. Even weirder was that I could feel them, like an extension of my body. I could feel everything that touched them, everything that they touched. I was even able to move them.
Slowly, I managed to drag them through the water around me so that I could see them. They brushed against my tail, tickling it. My eyes widened when I saw what they were.
Wings. I had real, light purple, feathered wings. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to be waterproof, and they really weighed me down underwater.
So, I went up to experiment. I’d seen wings before of course, on the birds that circled above my home. But to have some myself? To be honest, I’d never even considered the concept.
Long story short, I tried them out. So now, I find myself in this embarrassing situation. Yes, any help would be greatly appreciated. And please, I would be ever so grateful if you kept it to yourself that you helped me get out of this tree.
Final Comments: This one was pretty strange… Somehow, I end up talking to the reader at the end of a lot of my stories.
