“The scuba instructor…”

prompt suggested by E. L. Stew

I used to love scuba diving. I thought that it was just the coolest thing, to be able to go down and see all the different species of colourful fish swimming through the coral reefs. I actually used to take lessons too, from a man named Herbert. He taught me everything about scuba diving. And I mean everything. We would talk about the history, the science behind the equipment, just anything and everything about scuba diving. We bonded through scuba diving and we quickly became good friends.

But then I moved. I had to move, because my little town didn’t have a university, much less one that offered a program in marine biology.

So, I left my little town and bid Herbert farewell. I began studying my degree in a large city. Soon, all of my time was consumed by my studies. I spent more time at the dark library than outside. I talked to my friends less and less. I stopped talking to even my scuba instructor, whom I had been trying to keep updated about my studies due to our mutual interests.

Months turned into years. Finally, I graduated.

I returned home with a shiny new degree. But I realized that I had no friends left. I had turned them all away by my constant studying and refusal to leave my apartment.

That is, except for my scuba instructor. He was one of the first people to welcome me home and he even brought me a bouquet of coral to congratulate me for graduating.

We began spending more time together again, and it was like our time apart hadn’t even happened.

We’ve now been happily married for twenty years, and I’m proud to report that I’ve once again found my love for scuba diving.

Final Comments: This one felt pretty good to write. Nothing too intense, just a nice, easy story.
