Take Ten to Write

“My Present”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” – E. M. Forster

Here, come close. Closer… yes, that’s it. Perfect.

I have a secret to tell you: I’m not supposed to be here. Right this very second, I’m supposed to be performing lung surgery.

Yes, I’m absolutely certain. How do I know? Well, though I’m offended that you can’t just take my word for it, if you must know, I found My Future.

No, you can’t see it, and no I can’t find yours. I actually stumbled across mine by accident. and I’m not really in the mood to be discovered by Fate, so just shh please and thank you.

Now, I’d like to say that my life is exactly on track with where it’s supposed to be and that I’ve been a huge success every since I got a hold of My Future. Sadly, that’s not entirely true.

When it first came into my possession, I tried following My Future to the letter. But very quickly, I became obsessed and my life became an absolute mess instead of the untangled, clear path that I thought My Future was supposed to be. I became paralyzed by the smallest details that My Future didn’t offer, such as what coloured shirt I was going to wear that day.

Eventually, I forced myself to stop trying to conform to My Future. Sure, I enjoy looking at it from time-to-time, but I’m over it now. I’m done with My Future controlling my present.

What was that? Do I regret it? Regret what? Ah, straying from My Future.

Well, I’m proud to say with absolute confidence: No. No, I don’t regret it. Not in the slightest.

Final Comments: This was actually a really fun one to write.
