“My Mechanic”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
“A robot is broken, but nobody but the most special of people can fix him.”
prompt suggested by Mary
I wish I could be fixed. I wish that a Mechanic would find me so that I could jump and laugh and play. I’ve heard stories of others of my kind who were fixed by a Mechanic, who were no longer trapped in these transparent, plastic cages. But I haven’t found my Mechanic yet. And sometimes, I wonder if I ever will.
One time, long ago, I wasn’t in this plastic cage. I was free to move around and do what I pleased.
But that only lasted a short while. Before long, I was picked up by this big, monstrous claw and my heart was ripped out. My arms and legs were strapped down with heavy metal cuffs and I was encased in this clear prison.
The worst part is that I can see my heart. It’s in its own little prison, down near my feet, just out of my reach.
Every day, I see faces. Small faces, staring up at me, and bigger faces, either smiling and nodding or frowning and shaking their heads. I’ve seen my brothers and sisters be picked up and taken away. Apparently, they’re taken to be freed. They’re given their hearts back and they’re allowed to play with the small faces all day.
But that’s just a rumour. The truth is, I don’t know what happens when you’re taken away.
Still, I can’t help but hope that a magical Mechanic–a small face–will one day come and pick me up and free me. I’ve been wishing for it for years.
Maybe today will be the day. Maybe today, I’ll find my Mechanic.
Final Comments: I feel like the beginning of this one was a bit rocky, but I think it smoothed out as I went along. I did enjoy writing the imagery for this one though.
