“Murder Suspects”

Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!

Prompt: “Don’t be sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” he says, shaking his head. “It wasn’t your fault.”

“What, so you’re saying that you’d be in the back of a cop car if you didn’t know me?”

“Er, well, probably not.”

“Exactly.”

He rolls his eyes. “Come on, it’s not that big a deal. We didn’t do anything that bad.”

“Maybe not, but have you heard what they’re saying about us?”

“No. Why?”

I lower my voice to a whisper. “Apparently, they’re bringing us in as suspects to a murder.”

What?

“Shh,” I hiss, elbowing him in the side. “All we have to do is ask for a lawyer. That way, they can’t ask us any questions.”

“Are you sure that’s how it works?”

“No, but they don’t know how much I know.”

“I guess…”

He sighs and rests his head on the car window to look out. We’ve arrived at the police station.

Just before we’re pulled out of the car, I lean over to him and whisper, “Whatever you do, just don’t tell them that we went downtown earlier, okay? Promise me.”

He frowns. “Why?”

“Just… don’t.”

Final Comments: This felt all over the place. Didn’t like it.
