“Mirror Me”
Author’s Note: This is a Take Ten to Write story and has not been proofread for errors. If I feel inspired or if there’s interest in the story, I’ll post a revised, edited, and extended version at a later date. Happy reading!
Your hand moves in time with mine, slowly wiping the smooth surface. The cloth gives the occasional high-pitched screech as it drags over a patch of plaque that’s holding on for dear life. You open your mouth wide and let out a deep breath, fogging up the wall between us. Moments later, you wipe it away again, bringing you back into my view.
We lock eyes, and I smile. You smile back.
You begin copying my every move. Up goes our hands, smoothing out those last streaks of water. Down comes the cloth, hanging limply and filled with water and gunk. Our mouths open in a synchronized yawn before closing, our eyes fluttering sleep out of them.
You turn, finished your chores and ready to get on with your day. But I’m not finished yet. I’m not ready for you to go.
I stand still, waiting for you to notice me. Your hand reaches for the doorknob and I know that it’s now or never.
My fist raises and bangs against the thin wall separating us. You jump, hand flying from the doorknob and reaching up to clutch at your chest. Slowly, you turn back.
We lock eyes, and I smile. You scream.
Final Comments: I really enjoyed visualizing this one. I think the spooky season is starting to get to me…
