“Lights Out”

This Take Ten to Write story was submitted by 10-year-old Mary. Happy reading!

Prologue

Mary and her father were going to the library. Mary really wanted a unicorn stuffie. “Can I buy that unicorn plushie?” Mary asked her father. “Of course!” replied her father. Mary and her father happily left with Mary’s new stuffie. Mary seemed delighted about her new plushie.

Part One: Talking Stuffies

“It’s so sad that Leona left,” said Leo The Lion sadly. “She was a good friend.” “I agree,” replied Polly The Penguin. Tess The Turtle and Sophia The Swan said, “I wish we could be alive when the lights turned on. We could find out who took Leona.”

Part Two: Back At The Library

The next night, Mary went to the library to return a book she had borrowed last week. But the library lights were off…

“Shhhh! Somebody’s coming!” Leo exclaimed. “It’s the person who took Leona!” Polly exclaimed. “You’re right,” Sophia realized. “Act like normal stuffies!” Tess said. “We don’t want to get spotted by the human!” “Leona!” whispered Leo. “Leona!” But Leona couldn’t hear him.  “Maybe you should say it louder,” Polly suggested. “Yeah, but if I do that, the human might hear me!” exclaimed Leo.

Part Three: Humans Discover Talking Plushies

Mary noticed the stuffies. “Can you guys talk?” Mary asked. “Yes, and we want our friend Leona back!” Leo declared. “By the way, I’m Leo, that’s Polly, that’s Sophia over there, and that’s Tess. “It’s nice to meet you all!” said Mary. “And, by Leona, do you mean the unicorn?” “Yes. Quite frankly. Leona was our good friend,” Polly remarked. “Oh, well I’m awful sorry I took her. You can have her back.” Mary offered. “Nah, just take her,” said the wise turtle, Tess. “Take her?” Sophia asked. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

Part Four: The Power Outage

The next day, there was a power outage at the library. But power outages meant lights out. And lights out meant talking stuffies! This was no good. The humans couldn’t find out about the talking plushies! Mary had to help them!

Part Five: Mary To The Rescue

Mary noticed the power outage immediately. She immediately rushed to the rescue. She rounded up the stuffies. She asked her father to buy them for her. She had come to the rescue at exactly the right time! Mary was happy with her new stuffies.

She played with her plushies all the time and had fun!
